Understanding Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a system of medicine that dates back as far as 1500 BC. The fundamental base for Ayurveda is customizing medicine and diets for each individual body. Those who practice Ayurveda take in to account what Dosha they are, and customize foods and spices to match. When Ayurveda is followed closely, all the five elements are balanced with in each person. The idea is that when we balance everything we enjoy greater health, within our bodies and our minds. If we don’t take care of our spirits and consciousness, we can experience physical illness. In the same line of thought, when we experience an illness we should be able to lessen the severity by taking advantage of specific foods and drinks that will help create balance.
Bringing Yogi Tea to the U.S.
When Yogi Bhajan started teaching Kundalini Yoga in the United States, he recognized a disconnect between body and mind with in his students. This is why he started to create a special blend of herbal tea to serve after each class. The students started to call this medicinal herbal tea ‘Yogi Tea’. The original blend used cardamom seed, clove, ginger root, cinnamon, and black pepper. This is a traditional and universal combination that is believed to balance the five elements with body. These same spices are used today in most of the Yogi Tea blends.
Golden Temple Restaurants
In the 70s several of Yogi Bhajan’s students opened vegetarian restaurants. These restaurants eventually spanned the western United States, parts of Canada, and Europe. The various Yogi Tea healing formulas were sold exclusively at these restaurants. The tea was a success, and many people started to visit the restaurants just for these special Ayurvedic tea blends.
First Packaged Yogi Teas
In the mid 1980s Yogi Tea Company was created. The different Company was created. The different healing teas were packaged individually and sold to coffee shops and tea houses. In the years that followed the distribution of this tea exploded. By 1988 the company had expanded the available teas by hiring herbalists to blend more herbal teas keeping the Ayurveda concepts in place.
